Young OC Artists Illustrate the Future of Recycling

Five young Orange County artists are doing their part to help OC Waste & Recycling promote the need for keeping green waste and food waste out of the landfills by recycling or reusing it in ways that benefit the environment. These five young artists are winners of the 2017 Eco Challenge Poster Contest, themed “Batting for a Green Planet.” One winner was selected from each of Orange County’s five supervisorial districts, and each will be recognized at a Angels’ Baseball pre-game, on-field ceremony on September 15th and will get their own Angels “bat kid experience” on dates to be determined. This year’s winners are:

  • Angela Flores, age 9, Placentia – Fourth District, Supervisor Shawn Nelson
  • Chelsey Ruiz, age 14, Garden Grove – First District, Supervisor and Board Vice Chair Andrew Do
  • Sophie Rafle, age 8, Costa Mesa – Second District, Supervisor and Board Chairwoman Michelle Steel
  • Maxwell Ngo, age 9, Tustin – Third District, Supervisor Todd Spitzer
  • Tanner Salgado, age 13, San Clemente – Fifth District, Supervisor Lisa Bartlett

Almost five hundred posters were entered into the contest, which challenged Orange County children between the ages of 8 and 14 to illustrate the benefits of food and green waste recycling. The Eco Challenge is a County-sponsored, regional program created to educate the community on how to reduce, reuse, and recycle with the goal of preserving our natural resources and landfill capacity for current and future generations.
